Birding with Dale Kelly

Wednesday 16th and Tuesday 22nd April

This is Dale's second visit to the Costa Blanca within a 12 months,

Lesser Kestrel

So Dale is an enthusiastic Bird Photographer and wants to get up close, always trying to improve on his images, that said I understand why he wanted not to tick run and have a big list it's about Field Craft, patience Understanding of light and shade, and positioning.

Dale had a list of to see birds So I put together a plan and route over the 2 full days to give him the best opportunity for photography.

Red Rumped Swallow

Day one

Bonete, Corral-Rubio, Petrola.

We started early you know that malarkey about early bird catches the worm. It's not true.
On arrival, It wasn't that good as the elements were against us the temperature outside the car was 4° and the wind speed was 35 knots so it was pretty much impossible to stay outside the car,
even holding the camera steady was almost impossible, not forgetting the wind chill it was freezing cold. It didn't help as were we both in shorts and tea shirts so most of the photography was done from the car.

Great Bustard

Great Bustards was one of the target birds and achieving it was quite easy to see these Giant Birds of the plains, but getting up close for photography was a bit more challenging we persevered and eventually Dale got what he wanted, a total of over 40 Great Bustards seen.

My camera and lens combination seems to work better when the air is colder and it focuses correctly as opposed to when it's hot and the heat is on and there's heat diffraction which affects the autofocus and it throws the autofocus off.

Great Bustard

The seasonal pools and lakes are still there and I think they're a little fuller after re-sent rains.

Calandra Lark was often seen but was difficult to photo in the howling wind, Corn Bunting everywhere, also lots of Rock Sparrow, Dale got some amazing images of Common Kestrel and Lesser Kestrel. I flushed a Purple Heron, which disappeared over the undulating hills.

Other birds seen

Yellow Wagtail, Hoopoe, Lapwing, Tree Sparrow, Green Sandpipers, Thekla Lark, Marsh Harriers, Buzzard, Stone Curlews, LRP, Gadwall, Woodchat Shrike, Iberian Southern Grey Shrike, Barn Swallows, Pallid Swift, etc.
Lots of little stuff like Greenfinch linnet, Gold Finch.

The temperature picked up, but not by much and eventually, we decided to go to Yecla for the afternoon.
The right decision almost immediately on a Black Wheatear, Woodchat strike, both forms of Black-eared Wheatear and up close, Short-toed Lark, Calandra Lark, Lesser Kestrel, No Sandgrouse today. Heard only Quail.

Black-Throated Black-eared Wheatear

White Throated Black-eared Wheatear

There were long periods of flatness without any birds but in the end, it was a successful day.

Day 2
The plan is to be at San Felipe at first light so this should be the best part of the day the early worm etc lots of Great Reed Warbler, Cetti's Warblers numerous, Reed Warblers, Red-knobbed Coot and Marbled Duck, Purple Heron, hundreds of Mediterranean Gulls, Glossy Ibis, Great White Egret fly past, lots of mosquitoes early but moved off as the sun got up there was some light rain.

Time pressure was important as we had a lot of ground to cover.
 Next Stop

Benijzuar and the Segura River.

It was good
Nightingales every 50 meters, Woodchat Shirke, probably 3.  Turtle Dove plenty but proved to be difficult for photography. Common Cuckoo several.

Common Cuckoo

At least 4/5 Golden Oriole I was about a nanosecond from getting an image very frustrating. (update after going through my Compact Flash Cards I did get the Golden Oriole) see Below

Golden Oriole

Common Cuckoo across the other side of the river

Heard and saw Melodious Warblers, Spotted Flycatcher, Pied Flycatcher. The best serin I've ever seen so colourful and yellow. We had a rewarding few hours there.

European Roller

Time pressing on we headed back, passing by San Felipe and en route to lower la Marina at the Monastery there were at least two pairs of European Rollers, heard some Bee-eaters but not seen. A Booted Eagle circled above being mobbed by a Common Kestrel. Tree Sparrow,

European Roller

European Roller

El Pinet, Montnegra.
Collared Pratincole, Avocets, Common Tern, Little Tern, Sandwich Tern, Greater Flamingo.
All done there and off to Montnegra which turned out to be my worst decision as the black clouds started to gather it was almost twilight. But there was one golden moment a Rock Bunting showed very well.

Rock Bunting

when I left GA 7 o'clock this morning there was no rain forecast,
Shortly after we arrived at Montnegra the heavens opened and so after an hour of sitting in the heavy rain waiting for the Trumpet Finch to put in an appearance, we decided to call it a day and that was the end of our second Day. 10 hours of birding and some classic images under the belt.

So these are my photos of the 2 days I am pretty sure Dale's will be a so much better than mine.  Dale has the latest Canon equipment, while I'm a bit old school still using 16 year old Canon camera, from 2006.
I still think the image are ok and not too bad, although abit of digital noise at above 400 iso. And these images are at very low resolution for the blog at 72 kilobytes

Nice Pink Bill

 Thank you so much, Dale
I enjoyed our days out, see next time

Woodchat Shrike

Have fun go birding

Avocet
I've not mentioned every bird seen.
Cheers Bryan

Corral-Rubio, Bonete, Petrola, Yecla, and El Clot ect

At last a rewarding day Birding

Thursday the 27th of March

Early start and away and on the road by 7 o'clock and on route to Bonete and 1 hour 15 minutes later we were Birding, Calandra Lark was easy, and the odd Barn Swallow looped around, at El Bachilla, Good numbers of Rock Sparrow, also there a good number of Common Kestrels and also Lesser Kestrels, probably 13 + birds in the air at one time and close range. Squabbling over territory and the cracks in the farmhouse wall,

hare
Big flocks of Gold Finch, Linnet, and several Hoopoe, we managed to flush 3 hares which were good as they ran right in front of the car, a little bit further on there was  a nice group (7) of the mostly male Northern Wheatear, also there Woodchat Shrike,

Northern Wheatear

Woodchat Shrike

And Iberian Southern Grey Shrike, Stone Curlews, and Marsh Harriers, and during the day we saw lots probably (30+)

Iberian Southern Grey Shrike

Marsh Harrier

The plains of Corral Rubio and Petrola

It wasn't long before we found Great Bustards' first group of 13 which took flight and watched them disappear over the ridge, and another group of 16,

 Great Bustard

 Great Bustard

Avocets, Gadwal, and Yellow Wagtail, were also seen. The bird of the day was an impressive Spanish Imperial Eagle, which hawked low over the plains flushing the Calandra Larks, and Corn Buntings we lost it as went over the undulating hills only for the bird to pop up again,

Spanish Imperial Eagle

Spanish Imperial Eagle

we gave chase and managed some better views. What a bird and massive. I forgot to bring Werther's butter sweets to celebrate the Eagle so a eucalyptus cough sweet was used instead.

This is my second encounter with this Spanish imperial Eagle in recent months see my blog Four Days Birding With Arte Lesyvor 8th, of November.
So the Spanish Imperial Eagle has overwintered around the Corral Rubio area and hadn't strayed very far from that area.

Habitat

So after the recent bad weather, the seasonal pools are back but there is no way near the levels of 3 or 4 years ago, and they will dry up fast so if want to make the most of it and planning to go birding.

Go Soon.

Corn Bunting singing almost everywhere. Green Sandpipers, Kentish Plover, Red Shank, Greater Flamingos, Black-winged Stilts, Black-necked Grebe, Lapwing,

 Kentish Plover

 Kentish Plover

We stopped at the Estación for the little bustard but with no luck, we decided to make a quick dash for Yecla.

Which worked for us first bird seen was a Black Wheatear quickly followed by Black-eared Wheatear, a Blue Rock Thrush, another Woodchat Shrike, and a female Black-eared Wheatear, watched a Booted Eagles take out a baby Rabbit,

Black throated Black-eared Wheatear

female Black-eared Wheatear

The Black-eared Wheatear (Oenanthe hispanica) exhibits two color morphs in its male plumage: one with a black throat and the other with a white throat. Both morphs share other key characteristics like a contrasting black and white tail pattern, black wings, and a reddish-ochre back in breeding males. The female Black-eared Wheatear has a more muted plumage with a brown back and ocher underparts, as well as a white rump and brown wings.

A flock of 12 Pin-tailed Sandgrouse which I did initially dismissed as pigeons but as follow through the binoculars I was mistaken.  A Red Kite popped up from nowhere and had a duel with Buzzard.

Out most days out ish about 9 oclock clock returning about 4 o'clock

Bluethroat

So I'm briefly doing the highlights, it has been tough going it seems to be getting harder and harder to find the Birds, with two day's hardly see anything.

Ferruginous Duck

I think we covered the area well and we didn't miss much, with one exception, Great Spotted Eagle. we spent some considerable amount time looking for this bird

At the Clot de Galvany

Stand out moment was the Ferruginous Duck a total of 8 birds were seen and showing well, and the best time to see them occurs late afternoon.

Ferruginous Duck

Good numbers of White-headed Duck and Black-necked Grebe,

Dartford Warbler

Dartford Warbler

San Felipe
Penduline Tits,  A Subalpine Warbler,
was a very surprising sighting, at Santa Aguada I sat down on one of the benches taking the sun well i phished and up it popped right in front of me, well i nearly fell of the bench, I got the relevant features pale eye ring, I called Arte over we got another look at it wasn't easy as worked it's way through scrub. they never are.

just to muddy the water there was a pair of Sardinian warblers which were in the same area of scrub which I photographed by mistake thinking it was the Subalpine. Bluethroats and a quite few Booted Eagles.

Sardinian warbler

The areas covered Santa Pola Salinas, El Pinet, lower La Marina, Palm Farm Road, Palette Road, The Monastery,  Bellavista Road, Maigmo Mountain, Montnegra, and Carabassi Beach Road. And everything in between and returned many times to the same locations as we looped around.
